Backbone Mountain Youth Center

Backbone Mountain Youth Center

In 1964, the General Assembly appropriated funds to establish a forestry camp near Backbone Mountain in Garrett County. The Backbone Mountain Forestry Camp for Boys opened in May 1966. The camp was renamed as the Backbone Mountain Youth Center (BMYC) in 1977.

Today, BMYC serves male youth who have been ordered by the courts to receive treatment services. The treatment program serves male youth and typically lasts for six to nine months. BMYC provides dietary, medical, educational, and counseling services as well as space for recreation. In addition to receiving services, youth residing at BMYC attend school in the facility year round, five days a week for six hours a day.
